I've got a Marantz RC5400 that was not working. Disassembly and cleaning of the screen seems to have fixed it.

Silly me, I thought before I actually used it that it would be good to flash it with the latest firmware. I know, the latest is seven years old, but still.

Now it's asking me to calibrate the screen, and it fails every time. I've tried a half dozen times. Reflashed the firmware, no change. Tried the older firmware as suggested, and thesoftware won't let me do it.

When it finished the firmware downloads, it instantly went to Calibrate. When I downloaded a file to it, it never went out of Calibrate; I thought would restart at that point. I can only get the Marantz logo and startup procedure to occur by powering it down, then up/

So now it's got Firmware 3.3.1.6 and it's a brick. Any ideas?

You likely did not seat the screen properly. Open unit back up, power it up, use toothpick to calibrate, touch one pixel up and to the right of the dot in the center of the crosshairs and the let it do its thing.

Once calibrated, put the unit back together and ensure you can recalibrate.

So... what can I do to be sure it has seated properly? My guess is that if I do this, I'll have a unit that will be okay until someone happens to enter the Calibrate mode. Or will that cure it, even if I do go into Calibrate?

If you replaced the screen with OEM screen, it may be that it did not exactly fit in the plastic tray/bezel. You may need to do some work there. Otherwise, it could be that the felt around the bezel is too tight and pressing on the screen preventing correct calibration.

Lyndel,
I "replaced" the screen in that I "re" "placed" the same screen that I took out.

The screen had been totally unresponsive. I opened up the remote. Out of the case, it worked. I cleaned the screen with a bit of moisture on a soft soft paper towel, and cleaned behind and around the bezel, and it still worked. I put it together. It still worked. I flashed the firmware. The remote goes through the process of asking for calibration touches in three, yes three, corners; it then says calibration did not work, try again. Repeatedly.

There were other details about what screens came up when that I put in the first post, in case these matters. One thing I did not mention is that two things cause the startup Marantz logo to come up:
disconnecting and reconnecting the battery
hitting the reset button in the back of the remote

I'm not sure that logo came up after flashing the firmware, because it happens rather quickly and I just didn't think to look.

Really weird. However, the 5400 has the same screen as the TSU3000. Did you try the pin-prick method for making screen work?

I just tried the toothpick method. I will now search for pin-prick, because I don't know what you mean.

It's an odd day when the best way to find the answer to a Marantz or Pronto problem is to search the site for the word "prick." But it worked!

I did not remember that the calibration process on the RC5400 required touching all four corners, so when I touched only three of them and the process appeared to move forward to an announcement of failure, it still seemed as though the remote was registering all of the touches.

The pin prick method cured it. The longest part of the process was finding the method. If you need it, you'd best search for the word "prick" and designate the search to return answers as posts, not threads. The thread gives you twenty-four pages to go through. If you want to just go read all of them, they are at [Link: remotecentral.com]

And as someone said back in 2008,

Thanks to bongiornoa, PeraV, fransvdmb, jw2k_fr, and many others for discovering and documenting this fix!

And more thanks to Lyndel for passing this on to me.
